During the majority of 2024, I had the exquisite privilege of illustrating a book for the poet Trier Ward. When the illustration contract was done, she prompted me with another commission: designing an artistic logo for her brand.

She didn’t have an idea for a design, so I began by reading all of her poetry to look for common themes and symbolism. From this reading I designed her Mobius Strip Orchid; alluding to her themes of math and science, mental turmoil, and feminine sexuality. To quote her directly when I submitted my proposal: “I think you may have crystalized the themes in my work better than I have!” I was deeply honored to hear this, especially as a mostly conceptual artist.

From there, I scanned my watercolor into a digital image and began editing; my client wanted a a business card that served as a decorative sticker, something that people would keep long term instead of losing in their pockets.

We started as I do all my commissions: a sketched design for my client to approve, and a quote based on projected number of work hours and cost of materials. Based on the specifications of the project, and any deadlines the client requires if applicable, I draft a contract specifically for your project to protect your investment and expectations and my needs. Each contract I draft is open to editing by the client; I never want either party to sign until we are both totally satisfied with the terms.

Depending on the complexity, a commission for a hand-painted or hand-drawn design is $50 - $100 for the original work (including the proposal and preliminary sketch), and another $50 - $100 for the digital designing.
