My friend approached me with this commission in the spring of 2023. It features her blue heeler Shadow, whom I used to walk with in the foothills of my home town since I was 12, so I was very happy to jump on the chance to depict him in my art again. About a year after I completed the commission, Shadow sadly past away, which only makes this painting mean even more to both me and my client.

My client sent me one of her own photos that she wanted me to paint from. We discussed her budget and any potential deadlines, and I got to work. I require contracts for paintings like this now; I draft each contract specifically for the particular project, and I never want either party to sign until my client has had a chance to review and propose edits. I take it very seriously that my project contracts always protect the needs of both me and my clients.
